I went outside today, early in the morning. Something had woken me from my sleep- a thought, what it was I do not recall…and something caught my eye. It was one of the black many cobra pepper plants just sitting in a corner of the garden gently waving in the breeze. Some of the normally black peppers came in blood red others still with a touch of yellow that made them look like they had flames painted on them. They glistened in the morning light as morning dew and drops left from the sprinklers made them sparkle in the sun. You know those black cobras are something else… I sat there looking at them and all the colors of that single plant alone and began to realize the seriousness of my actions.
This was life from a far away rainforest in Central America… -One that had undoubtedly existed in obscurity for over a thousand years. I began to drift off and reminisce about the place I had taken it from so long ago on my many travels. Not long ago this beauty was mostly unknown to the world, sitting in a steamy jungle like a faceted gem surrounded by rare birds and tall tropical trees, Growing in patches of light under the dense canopy of an ancient forest. I could still feel the burn of the sun and the buzzing in my ears. Incredible...
I realized that the pepper in front of me> one that I had cloned hundreds of times in vats and sold off by the handfuls was once a rarity among rarities. A plant that came into existence blooming in the great valley of the birds and passed into the shadows of giants of wood like a ghost out of the blue. This was something that had existed undisturbed and unchanged since before my great grandparents were ever born.
I yielded greater power than I had originally imagined. Such Beauty> No Common place for anyone who could afford to pay my fee. I thought long and hard about my actions… All I ever wanted was to earn a living bringing something wonderful to the world that everyone could have. Something rare beyond believe from far far away… -I had succeeded. I wonder if anyone realized what a rare treasure this simple dark as night pepper once was and still is? Or do they just see another item up for bids? Do all great things start then end like that? Just common place goods? Indeed I had succeeded. But was it appreciated?
